After two thrilling quarter finals battle in Euro 2008, the underdogs prevailed where Germany beat Portugal 3-2 and Turkey beat Croatia 1-1 after a penalty shoot out.
Now, we are into our third quarter finals where Netherlands, the favorites will take on Guus Hiddink Russia the underdogs. Another upset on the cards?
Netherlands had an easy first round where they beat World Champions Italy 3-0 and then humbled France 4-1. Holland wrapped up their group game against Romania with a 2-0 victory.
On the contrary, Russia had to fight to their last group match. Russia lost 1-4 to Spain in the opening match. A 1-0 victory over Greece followed by a 2-0 win over Sweden sailed the Russian to the quarter finals.
Although the Dutch remained favorite for this match, Russia’s sparkling 2-0 victory over Sweden in Innsbruck on Wednesday has made this match an interesting one.
With Ruud van Nistelrooy on fire in attack for Netherlands, Russia can call on revitalise Roman Pavlyuchenko to get the goals.
It seems that teams that were rested well coming to the quarter finals hasn’t fared well thus far with both loosing in the likes of Portugal and Croatia. I hope the same does not happen to the Dutch.
In short, i will go for a Netherlands win. 2 goal victory maybe?
Changes
- Holland Marco van Basten is set to make nine changes to the team that started against Romania.
- Russia coach Guus Hiddink is expected to name an unchanged line up to the one that performed well in their 2-0 win over Sweden
Key Statistics
- Russia won the most corners of any team in the group stages (27). Holland won just seven, the least of the 16 teams competing
- Holland beat the Soviet Union 2-0 in the Euro 88 final thanks to goals from Ruud Gullit and Van Basten

35 min, still 0-0 bout teams are playing carefully with some serious occasions to open the scoring.
Van Der Sar saved 3 goals so far, Russia is playing very well a very good Arshavin and kolodin’ impressive game
Netherlands players are wearing black armbands because Boulahrouz’s baby died in the week, so it’s a mark of respect for that.

Yeah wonderful win! No doubt about it… Netherlands was second best for the whole match. Nothing they could have done to stop the Russians.
Russians really swift and fast!

What do you all think about Turkey?
By Anto on Jun 22, 2008 | Reply
Holland played very badly. They deserved to lose because they didnt put any effort to win. Did they underestimate Russia?

i think turkey and Russia will play in the final match. As, despite both team were not favourite ones, they could take victor by their hearts.
Semi Final : Germany- Turkey (Again, favourite teams will lost, i hope
Semi Final: Spain - Russia
