Playing Games Ahead of the Series - Is it Controversial Marketing Again?
The England team is to tour India later this year. But passing comments and mudslinging has begun already. At a time when the teams should be preparing for the series, the former English cricketer, Geoffrey Boycott says that the Indian team is a team of Grandpas. What he meant by this that the seniors are getting too old and are still sticking to the pitches instead of calling it off.
In an interview to a local tabloid, he says that the team has lost its capability but is still clinging to the game due to the extensive glamour associated. Cricket is the most famous game in India. Almost everyone is a fan of this game, irrespective of gender or age. Under such circumstances, there is too much glamour associated with the game in India. Maybe India is the only country where the game has so much craze associated with it.
The news leaked out to the Indian TV channels which ran it once or twice and then dismissed it as it failed to generate interest among the viewers. Neither the fans created any farce nor the Indian Cricket Team Members and the associated bodies took it seriously. Only Boycott knows his intention behind the statement. As regards the team consisting of old people, he knows very well that the English team gets a tough competition every time it faces the Indian cricketers. Maybe he tried to use controversial marketing tactics to promote his name!
The former skipper of the English cricket team says that these people (the Indian players) have too many benefits attached with the career that they would not leave it until kicked out by the gaming authorities. He explicitly referred to the endorsements that these players get by way of advertisements and brand promotions. In his own words as printed in the Daily Telegraph he wrote, “The great Indian batsmen are long in the tooth and approaching the end of their careers. Some of them are desperate to prolong their international lifespan, not just because they love cricket but because of the endorsement deals available as long as they play the game.”
But what Boycott forgot that the endorsements are available even to the former players in the cricketing country of India. Recently, the BCCI has limited the number of endorsements per player. So does that mean that the Indian players will leave the game to trade in the stocks? Well, if they love only money and not the game, they will.
