Shabana Azmi launches Javed Siddiqui's book 'Shyam Rang' at Bhavans college on 9th February 2008
Noted playwright Javed Siddiqi's novel 'Shyam Rang' released
Javed Siddiqi, the eminent playwright and scriptwriter, released his novel based on the eternal love story of Shri Krishna & Radha titled 'Shyam Rang' at a star studded evening at Pranganga, Bhavan's College campus in Andheri West. Veteran actor Shri Naseeruddin Shah released the book in the presence of Shri Gulzar and Javed Akhtar amongst other dignitaries. Siddiqi has dedicated months of his time in researching the play, which is in a class of its own.
Shyam Rang, his play is a compassionate quest into this poignant saga of desire, denial and devotion. An interesting interplay of illusion and reality, the play is also a meditation on the nature of love in its various facets, through a prism of perspectives. Javed Siddiqi's eloquent and enlightened writing brings an epic alive. His writing is supported very strongly by lyricist Gulzar, who has penned two songs for the play.
Says Siddiqi, 'Part of our folklore since times immemorial and one of the greatest love story of all time is that of Shri Krishna and Radha. This theme has inspired several artistes over the years, in painting, poetry, dance and music, creating works of invaluable art.'
This play is now published in a book by Sambhavna Prakashan in Hindi and will be available on the stands from 9th February onwards. Hosted by Bhavan's Cultural Centre, the evening saw a stage presentation of a few important scenes from the play by Essay Ensemble, Mumbai. Directed by Salim Arif and choreographed by Renu Sharma of Kalashray, the scenes were performed by actors like Harsh Chhaya, Lubna Salim, Nilu Dogra, Anangsha and Rajiv Kumar who brought alive the characters with their brilliant performances.
